This beautiful male damselfly is named Ebony Jewelwing--what a beautiful name! In the forest he appears almost completely black, but in the right lighting his colors show. The female looks much the same, but has a white spot near the ends of her wings. I saw several of these damselflies in various forests in Michigan. It was a new one for me, and I was very happy to see them. Michigan, June 2019 7/7/19 Judith Sparhawk
This is a view of Mackinac Bridge, the 5 mile long bridge that connects the Lower Peninsula of Michigan with the Upper Peninsula. This suspension bridge spans Mackinac Straits, with Mackinaw City on the south and St. Ignace on the north. This view is taken from the north end of the bridge. I saw several of these Black Squirrels in forests in Michigan. They were quite striking with their shiny coats and bushy tails. The field guide says that although they are called Black Squirrels, they are not a separate species, but just a dark morph of the more common Gray Squirrel. Michigan, June 2019
