Red-necked Grebe with Baby ~ This nesting grebe had at least one hatchling which popped its head up through her back feathers from time to time. She remained on the nest the entire time I watched, suggesting she still had unhatched eggs she was incubating. Elk Island, in Alberta, Canada, is an active breeding location for this type of grebe.
Pond Lilies ~ These Indian Pond Lilies were in small lakes in the Elk Island area of Alberta, Canada.
~ While visiting Elk Island in Alberta last week, I found a pair of nesting Red-necked Grebes. This female may well have been still incubating eggs, although she had at least one hatchling under her feathers. The male was swimming in the lake nearby the nest. The yellow flowers in the background are Indian Pond Lilies.
