I'm not great at gull identification until they get to adult plumage, but when I saw this one I knew it was an immature Glaucous-winged Gull, most likely first winter. It is so different from the most common gulls in the area, I wanted to document it. Avila Beach Pier, CA,

This scoter was photographed off the Avila Beach Pier. Although they like riding the surf, they also hang out in quiet waters.
