I believe this is an Eastern Carpenter Bee. It was photographed in Arizona, which isn't very far east, but according to my insect book, it's a dead ringer.
This tortoise was in the gardens at the Chiricahua Desert Museum out of Portal, Arizona.
While walking in the forest in Cave Creek Canyon in the Chiracahua Mountains of Arizona, I saw several skunks. I had seen them at night before, but these were the first ones I'd seen in the daylight. This one was snuffling in the leaves and underbrush looking for grubs or insects to eat.
