We headed out on Marathon Road in search of the Kenai herd of Caribou. We never found the caribou, but saw interesting scenery of tundra, with stunted plants and spruce forests.
This lovely vignette was along the nature grail at the Kenai Wildlife Nature Center.
Traditionally, the native Alaskans cremated thier dead, to release the spirits.. When the Russian Orthodox Church came to Alaska, this was not acceptable. However, in the frozen earth, burial was difficult. The Natives developed Spriit Houses to cover the graves, to protect the spirits.
