I was driving on a street I hadn't been on for quite awhile and saw several pieces of art along the side of the road. I found a place to park and walked back. This is just a tiny corner of an interesting sculpture of a large plant and a bunch of leaf-cutter ants. The size and shape of the sculpture made it hard to photograph effectively, but I especially liked this bit with the ant's shadow showing on the ground.
I went back to San Timoteo Canyon yesterday and hiked the western end of the canyon, which is quite different from the eastern, more riparian end where I hiked the other day. I found that the hillsides were dotted with many yucca plants, almost all in bloom right now. I guess our very rainy December paved the way for this extravagant bloom cycle. Based on my field guide, I believe this is Mojave Yucca. This close view shows the many individual flowers in the spear. 3/15/22 www.sparhawkphotography.com
While hiking in San Timoteo Canyon, there were very few wildflowers yet. One kind was these Fiddlenecks, and I took a few shots. This one is unusual in that all three stalks were growing together, each with the curly stems with flowers. I liked the way they were all curling the same way, forming a repetitive pattern. 3/14/22 www.sparhawkphotography.com
