While I was out birding in San Timoteo Canyon today, this Red-tailed Hawk soared overhead. As he flew over, I got a quick shot of him as he appeared to near the moon. I couldn't get a sharp shot of both the hawk and the moon, but I kind of liked the effect nonetheless.
This little guy came out to check out his shadow today--and he can see it! Actually this is a Yellow-belllied Marmot, a western species, not officially the groundhog that is traditionally in the eastern US and is famous for February 2nd. The groundhog is a type of marmot (there are 14 species world wide), but this was the best I could do for celebrating the day. This one was photographed in Yosemite National Park, near the campground where I stayed in 2011.
2nd post for
Walking in my son's neighborhood in San Diego on Christmas Day, I passed a yard with this great succulent garden in what looked like a birdbath. I thought it was really pretty with all the different colors of plants.
