I've seen California Pepper Trees all my life, but have never seen one with flowers. These little white flowers were all over this tree, and I know later in the season it will be covered with the hanging clusters of red "berries", the fruit or seeds, apparently resulting from these flowers. I just thought this earlier stage in the tree's growth year was interesting. 3/1/22 www.sparhawkphotography.com
I saw this female Northern Flicker the other day, hiding in the leaves on a tree. Suddenly she flew out, toward me, and landed on this (not very photogenic) fence. She stayed long enough for a few shots, before flying back to the tree. Although you can't see it in this view, she was the Red-shafted sub-species, which is about all we have in this area. The red in the wings is visible in flight, as is the characteristic white rump patch. This is a common woodpecker in this area. 2/28/22 www.sparhawkphotography.com
After watching and shooting the woodpeckers in a local park recently, I noticed a huge bush, much taller than I am, and very full, covered with these interesting flowers and somewhat curly leaves. I'd never seen it before and couldn't resist taking a few shots. Although the park isn't exactly landscaped, there are some trees and plants that aren't truly wild, or native. If anyone knows what this plant is, I'd love an ID. 2/27/22 www.sparhawkphotography.com
