Hoary Comma Butterfly ~ This view of the Hoary Comma shows the white comma on the underside of the lower wing, after which it is named. It was photographed in October of 2009l, in the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California.
Polyphemus Moth Caterpillar ~ I found this big interesting caterpillar on a small scub oak at Castlewood Canyon State Park in Colorado. I photographed it inches from the ground, and only later found it in the field guide to know what it would become someday, a Poyphemus Moth, one of the large silkmoths. I hope to see one one day.
