This Bewick's Wren was photographed at Whitewater Canyon Preserve, in southern California.
Island Scrub Jay ~ This jay lives only on Santa Cruz Island, in the Channel Islands off of the California coast. For years I've thought of going across the channel from Ventura to see this jay, which would be a life bird for my list. Last week I fnally did it! The Island Scrub Jay is much brighter blue, is somewhat larger, and has a larger bill than the Western Scrub Jay, which occurs in California and most western states. This view shows the large bill and the bright blue feathers. It was a wonderful feeling finally to see this bird which is endemic to such a small island.
Yellow-billed Magpie ~ This magpie is endemic to central California. It is smaller than the Black-billed Magpie found in other areas. I don't usually shoot birds on picnic tables, but this was the first photograph I've ever gotten of this bird, so until I get one perched in the old oak trees that they love, picnic table it is!
