Stream Orchid - Judith Sparhawk
When I was birding at Big Morongo Canyon Preserve yesterday, a hiker asked if I had seen the orchids. I had not, and have never seen orchids in that desert environment. A little while further down the boardwalk, he said he had found some. When I went to see, this little flower was what I saw. There were several plants, some with buds, but this was the only one with a flower. I thought it was very interesting, certainly very different. It is called a Stream Orchid, was only a few inches off the ground, with the flower about 1/2 inch across. It was difficult to photograph well, as I had to stay on the boardwalk and shoot down from above. Very fun discovery that I had just walked past without even seeing it.
