As I have been walking in my neighborhood, I have been walking by this plant for the last few weeks. First it shot up the stems with small buds (which I actually thought were the flowers), and then the buds began to open into really strange flowers. I have no idea what plant this is, although some of you Smuggers may well know. The flowers were so strange and different looking, I had to grab a couple of shots. UPDATE: Thank you to Pascual for the Latin name of this plant, Anigozanthos flavidus. She gave the French name, which Terry translated to Kangaroo Paws. I googled the Latin name, and an English name was given as Velvet Amber. What a great group of very smart and knowledgeable photogs we have! 5/15/20 My website: www.sparhawkphotography.com
On my birding trip to Salton Sea last weekend, I traveled many miles of agricultural fields. Imperial Valley in SE California is a major agricultural area, growing many different crops. This photo is from a field I drove past, and I have no idea what crop this was! It appeared to be something that had, perhaps gone to seed--acres and acres of these strange pom poms. Maybe some of you Smuggers will recognize just what it is. 6/7/20 My website: www.sparhawkphotography.com
Thanks to Rick for providing several common names for this plant--I'll choose Red Bird of Paradise. I figured our Arizona guy might know, as I've seen it growing in AZ quite a few times. I'm not sure what the name of this flowering bush is, but it is very bright and pretty. It grows well locally, and I have seen it growing in Arizona. This photo was taken as I drove in a neighborhood in the town of Brawley, CA, on my Salton Sea birding trip. 6/3/20 My website: www.sparhawkphotoraphy.com
