Along the street of a neighborhood I sometimes walk in, I noticed a Century Plant sprouting up its thick stalk, and knew that eventually it would be in flower. It takes quite awhile for the stalk to grow as tall as it does, and to break out into bloom. I hadn't been on that street for awhile, and when I walked there tonight, it was very tall and in full flower. This post shows an early view of the beginning stalk, plus the full flower of tonight, and a closer view of the flowers themselves. The old wives tale was that this plant got its name because it only blooms once in a century, tho I understand that is not accurate. It doesn't bloom often, however, so I was happy to record this event. 6/24/20 My website: www.sparhawkphotoraphy.com
This is more of a close up view of the mass of cactus flowers I saw the other day. I posted a shot of the larger group of flowers, as I was so amazed at the size of the cluster of flowers. This view give a better view of the flowers themselves. The flowers were each about 4 or 5 inches across--it was quite a sight to see! 6/23/20 My website: www.sparhawkphotography.com
I was driving home from a birding trip today and spotted these cactus flowers by the edge of the road. I did a U-turn and came back to photograph them. I was amazed how many blooms there were at one time--there were way more than I could shoot in one frame! I liked the backlighting of the cactus spines. 6/19/20 My website: www.sparhawkphotography.com
