I was walking around downtown Redlands on a photo shoot and noticed this window. I liked the way the shadows from the bars showed up on the curtains and the window edges.

Emily ~

Moonset Over Mt. Whitney ~ In my July East Sierra trip, one morning the almost-full moon was about to set over the rugged peaks, moving toward Mt. Whitney. As the sun rose higher, the pale gray peaks glowed almost white, giving a ghostly look. I decided to try it in black and white for more drama. Judith Sparhawk

Church on the Hill ~ During a June trip to Alberta, Canada, I visited the Ukraine Heritage Cultural Village. This was my favorite church there, and I liked it in color, yellow, with a metallic dome roof. I decided to try it in black and whilte as well, and liked the result. Judith Sparhawk

Lady in Chinatown ~ Los Angeles' Chinatown is a great place to view people and architeture.

Just Sittin' ~ I made a black and white version of this old man sitting on the sidewalk.

Buddha in Black & White ~ This close-up of Buddha is from the large statue in the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. I grew up across the bay from "the city" as SF is called. As kids we used to visit Golden Gate Park and stop for treats in the tea garden. I always admired this statue. The last time I was in SF I visited old favorites, and took this shot. After cropping the image, I decided to try it in B&W.

So Shy ~ This bust is a statue in the rose garden at Kimberly Crest, one of Redlands' historic mansions. It is unusual in the way the girl appears to be hiding. I shot her from several angles, and decided I liked this one best, showing her demurely peeking around her fingers.

Figurehead in Black & White ~ The figurehead on one of the ships at the Tall Ships Festival in Dana Point, California.

San Diego Design Center Pyramid ~ This interesting architectural structure anchors the San Diego Design Center. I liked the contrast of the "pyramid" and the glass windows of the buildings.

Life in the Fast Lane ~ Black & White~ This is a b&w version of an art composite photograph inspired by the urban architectural elements.

Villa Column in Black & White ~ I decided to try the wonderful details in this column and ceiling decoration in black and white. The column was at the Getty Villa Museum in Malibu, California. Although I liked the colors in the original, the details show up quite differently once the color is gone.

Memories in Black & White ~ This still life was set up and photographed to illustrate a poem I wrote for my most recent book, "The Captured Heart". It was shown in color in the book, but I wantd to try it also in black and white.

Artifacts of Long Ago ~ This still life began with an old original deed dated in 1772, for a piece of property purchased by one of my ancestors, John Nichols. He purchased 72 acres in what is now Massachusetts, for the sum of "thirty and four pounds". I added in a few other family artifacts from long ago, and recently changed it all to black and white.

The First Laptop

The First Laptop ~ This bas relief sculpture was from Ancient Greek times, seen at the Getty Villa Museum in Malibu, California. I noticed the woman, accompanied by her attandant, who is holding what I interpret to be "the first laptop". I got a kick out of it, and had to photograph it.

Down the Up Staircase ~ This title is a play on the old novel from the 1960's--or 70's ?--"Up The Down Staircase". This is a view looking down the spiral staircase at the Old Point Loma Lighthouse at Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego, California.

Headstone Carving ~ While birding in the Pioneer Memorial Cemetary in San Bernardino, I ran across this headstone, embellished with this lovely carving. It stood still better than the birds nearby, so I actually got several shots of it. I think this was my favorite. edit

Antique Station ~ Oro Grande, California

Narrow Gauge Steam Engine ~ This is a composite image from details at the local railroad museum. I used various filters on it, and changed it to B&W, with an infrared look.
