Point Iroquois Lighthouse

One view of this beautiful lighthouse and keeper's house, now a museum. It was surrounded by the low stone walls and lovely flowers.

Tawas Point Lighthouse

This lighthouse is at Tawas Point State Park, on Tawas Bay, of Lake Huron. It is a noted birdwatching site during migration, to which people travel from all over the country and even the world. June is not the best birding there, but it was a fun stop, walk along the shore, and to visit the lighthouse. Michigan, 2019

A charming lighthouse near Mackinaw City, next to the State Park. It was surrounded by lilac bushes, with their heavenly scent. Michigan, June 2019

Light at Whitefish Point

This is the Whitefish Point Light, on the northern shore of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. At some times of year it is one of the best birding spots in the state (unfortunately not in June!). Michigan, June, 2019

Point Iroquois Lighthouse

This lighthouse is out of Brimley, Michigan, on the Upper Peninsula. This was the one with the garden of Bleeding Heart flowers and Forget-Me-Nots. There was a great boardwalk trail along the shoreline. Michigan, June 2019

Up the Spiral Staircase

Grand Traverse Lighthouse

The Grand Traverse Lighthouse, Northport, MI, is at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula, which separates Lake Michigan from Grand Traverse Bay. It is within Leelanau State Park. It was built in 1852, and continues to act as a guide for sailors and ships.

Yaquina Bay Lighthouse

This was an early lighthouse, now part of Yaquina Bay State Park. It was found not to be adequate for maritime safety, so the Yaquina Head Lighthouse was built just up the coast.

Cape Meares Lighthouse

A cute little lighthouse at Cape Meares, a few miles from Oceanside, Oregon. The first visit to this place was so fog-shrouded that we could barely see the lighthouse from a few feet away. Fortunately the following day it was sunny and beautiful. (Thank you to arctangent and Terry Allen for correcting my location from Cape Lookout to Cape Meares.)

Yaquina Head Lighthouse

It took three trips to the Yaquina Head to get good views of this lighthouse, due to heavy fogs and extreme winds. Third time was a charm, with the fog bank waiting...

North Head Lighthouse

This lighthouse was at North Head or Cape Disappointment, Washington.

Tillamook Rock Lighthouse

This lighthouse operated from 1881 to 1957. It is often fog shrouded, but can be seen on clear days from Tillamook Head, Ecola State Park. I didn't get this shot until my third stop at this location.

Lighthouse on Tatoosh Island

Tatoosh Island is about a half mile off Cape Flattery, the most northwest point of the contiguous 48 states. This image emphasizes the lighthouse and the pretty colors in the sun.

Point Wilson Lighthouse

This lighthouse is on old Fort Worden, no longer a military base, and which is now a park in Port Townsend, WA. The lighthouse was built in 1919.

Lime Kiln Lighthouse

This lighthouse on San Juan Island was built in 1919. This site is one of the best places to see Orcas Whales swim by. Alas, none while I was there this time.

Cape Florida Lighthouse & Palms

Cape Florida Lighthose ~ This historic lighthouse from 1884 is in Bill Baggs State Park on Key Biscayne south of Miami. It has a stately look surrounded by gardens and dunes.

Old Point Loma Lighthouse ~ This lighthouse was build high on the cliffs above Point Loma in San Diego. It proved to be too high above the ocean, as it was often obscured by fog and clouds. The new light, built in 1891, is down the cliff at sea level. This lighthouse is part of Cabrillo National Monument.

Lighthouse With a Picket Fence ~ This is a view of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse in San Diego, CA. It is part of Cabrillo National Monument.

The New Point Loma Lighthouse ~ This working light guards the San Diego Harbor and coastline of Point Loma. It is called the "new" lighthouse, built in 1891, to replace the "old" 1855 lighthouse located 400 feet up the cliffs, and often obscured by fog and clouds. It is all part of Cabrillo National Monument.

Battery Point Lighthouse

~ Crescent City, California

Pigeon Point Lighthouse ~ 50 miles south of San Francisco, near the small town of Pescadero, this lighthouse has been warning mariners since 1872. The tower is 115 feet high, one of the tallest lighthouses on the West Coast. The fog muted the colors of this beautiful spot.

Point Reyes Lighthouse

~ Built in 1890, on the foggiest and windiest area in California, on a cliff close down by the water, to be visible to seamen navigating through the fog and along the coast in a rough storm. It is in Marin County, north of San Francisco. To reach the lighthouse, one must climb a steep descent down 315 steps (and back up!). Judith Sparhawk

Trinidad Memorial Light ~ In Trinidad, California, built in 1949, in memory of sailors lost at sea.

Battery Point Lighthouse

~ Crescent City, California. This lighthouse was built in 1856, reactivated in 1982. It is one of only three surviving from the original series of California lighthouses.

Trinidad Memorial Light, Trinidad, California ~ This light was built in 1949 as a memorial to sailors lost at sea; their names are shown at the site. It is a replica of the active Trinidad Head Light, which was built in 1879. The original fog bell from the Trinidad Head Light is hung beside the tower, and is rung at noon every day

Point Pinos Lighthouse, Pacific Grove, Monterey Peninsula, CA

~ This lighthouse was built in 1855, and is now surrounded by a golf course. It is not uncommon to see deer grazing on the grass and among the cypresses. Incidentally, I got yelled at by some golfers, trying to get this shot!

Old Point Loma Lighthouse, San Diego, California

~ This was the first Cape Cod style lighthouse built in California, in 1855. It was high on a hill, and thought to be an ideal site, but was so often obscured by low cloud banks and fog, it was replaced by the "new" Point Loma Lighthouse, down nearer the sea, in 1891.

Marblehead Lighthouse ~ This lighthouse is on the edge of Lake Eirie, at Marblehead, Ohio.

Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, Mendocino Coast ~ This victorian lighthouse is located a few miles north of the Village of Mendocino, on the northern California coast. It was built in 1909 and remains active.

Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, Mendocino Coast ~ This victorian lighthouse sits on the Mendocino Coast, just north of the Village of Mendocino. It was built in 1909 and remains active. It is open for visitors.
